How To Rock A Monotone Look

A monotone, or monochrome, look is when all of the pieces in your outfit are in one colour. I love it so much and currently it is my favourite type of dressing. It is very easy to do, looks very chic and gives an illusion of being taller. Yet, we have to insure that when we opt for a monotone look, we don’t look as if we didn’t have the energy to dress that day or that we have no clue how to look stylish. There are some tips and tricks that can transform your one-colour ensemble into something stunning.

Use every shade

The different pieces of your outfit don’t have to be the exact same colour. First of all, it is very difficult and time consuming to find clothes with the same colour saturation (colour saturation is how much pigment there is in a specific colour). The second thing is that doing the monotone look in different shades makes it more captivating. Let’s say you wanna do an all-blue look. Pair your navy pants with cobalt blue blouse, sky blue heels and a turquoise blue bag! Isn’t that fun??

If you wanna know what the shades of a specific colour are, you can try this childish experiment. Grab some colours (oil, acrylic or water colours should do). On a paper, squeeze three dots of one colour. Using a brush, spread the middle dot into a circle. Add a little bit of black and white to the side dots respectively, creating two more circles. You will see in front of you the different shade of the colour you are painting!

Use different materials

Just as with colours, the materials you are using do not have to be matchy matchy. Create different moods by mixing feminine and masculine materials, like lace with leather. Try out different textures and finishes too. For example, mix glossy wool with matt wool or soft draping cotton with a rough washed out linen.

Include a statement piece

If you want to spice up your monotone look, do one piece in a not-so-usual design. A blouse with an endless amount of ruffles or a pair of head-turner shoes. You can even keep everything simple and make a statement with you hairdo or hair colour.

Don’t forget about your hair & makeup

The simpler your outfit, the more you should pay attention to your hair and makeup. You don’t have to do anything crazy like a full makeup or a salon updo. Something simple that will enhance your natural beauty and will guarantee that your appearance is on point.

Add another pop of colour

Yes, we are talking about “one colour” styling, but it’s always fun to break the rules. You don’t necessarily have to add the other colour in the clothing. How about a red lipstick with a total white apparel? Or blue nails and a blue scarf in a look of different shades of yellow? I did the same thing in my look by adding colours that aren’t very contrasting to grey; that is a white bag and nude heels.

I have included some monotone looks for you to get a little bit of more inspiration. Everyday outfit or a special occasion look, now you know how you can rock it 😉
