How To Wear White And Look Slim

In my years of working as a stylist, I have always heard sentences as: “white makes me look bigger than I am”, ” white shows my imperfections” or “I look slim in black”. In this post today, I’m going to prove that false. Besides, I’m going to show you how white, just as any other colour, can have whatever visual affect you want it to have. Get ready to debunk the “myth of black” and learn the tricks of how to wear white and look slim and gorgeous.

Pay attention to the shapes

Consider the shape and silhouette of the garment you are wearing. Let’s take a look at Kim’s pictures below to understand. As you can see, both looks are in white but the result is completely different. Notice how the outfit on the right adds unnecessary bulk. In other words, the extra padded shoulders and the additional decoration on the coat in the hip area makes Kim look bigger than she is. On the other hand, the ensamble on the left is perfect. The blazer creates vertical lines that elongate the body. Also, it ends at the right spot on her hips. In addition, the slightly flared trousers add an extra slimming effect.

Here is another example that colour doesn’t matter as much as the shape. Meghan Markle is famous for her slender body. Nevertheless, she looks 4 sizes bigger in this “black” coat. Again, the shape of the sleeves visually create a huge figure. If you want that effect, then by all means go for it. This is why I love fashion. It satisfies every taste and opinion.

Proportions are important

Getting the right proportions in your outfits is crucial. Have you ever tried a coat that fits you well but didn’t buy it because something was wrong with the length? That is proportions. It usually deals with horizontal lines and where they are positioned on the body.

We have the lovely Ashely Graham here for demonstration. The white outfit hits the right proportion spots. The top and the skirt accentuate the waist. Even the bare skin in the middle highlights the waistline. Just the same, the skirt length creates a 2/3 separation in the lower section. Usually, visually cutting your body into thirds is more interesting than cutting it into halves. The black outfit would have looked better if the jacket was longer. Thus, it would have made the hips appear slimmer. In addition, it would have been even more effective if it was bigger in size. With that, Ashely would have seemed lighter.

Slimming fabrics

This is where the core of the “black” myth lies. People think that it is the colour that is slimming them. When it is actually the fabric that produces the end result. With fabrics, consider how sturdy, flowy or thick they are. Read the examples below to understand.

  1. In case you are a curvy lady and you are trying a pair of culottes that are made of thick denim. What happens? You will get a boxy shape because of the sturdy structure of the denim. So, how do you fix this problem? Replace the material with one that drapes. For instance, chiffon, silk or rayon. Those fabrics will follow the curvature of your body and won’t create extra bulk. Khloe Kardashian’s suit demonstrates how flow materials work better to achieve a slimming effect.
  2. Let’s assume you want a white sheath dress. What type of fabric you should consider in this case? If you go for cheap and thin jersey, it will make your imperfections (such as cellulite or love handles) so obvious that you will turn automatically to something black. The solution is to have the dress made from a good quality, thick, non transparent fabric. It will cover whatever you want to hide and it will give your body a beautifully toned shape. In Jlo’s case, the lining also helps.

Monotone in white

I have spoken before about wearing monotone. Click here to read about how to rock monotone looks. White colour is no exception. If you follow the above steps and do the whole outfit in white, great results are guaranteed. When you dress in one colour head-to-toe, you don’t cut your body horizontally and thus elongate it. As a result, you don’t look pulled to the ground, which means you will appear slimmer.

I hope you’ve found today’s post helpful and I have convinced you to wear white more often. I am even going to give you more reasons to wear white: it makes you look fresher and younger, and it doesn’t absorb heat in the summer. You have all the tools to look your best!
